Alex Pereira Claims To Have Been Assaulted by Ex-Girlfriend

Former UFC Middleweight champion and the reigning UFC Light-Heavyweight champion Alex ‘Poatan’ Pereira was never one to openly discuss his personal life. However, to the surprise of the MMA community, the Brazilian recently opened up about his now-failed relationship with Merle Christine, a German TV presenter and MMA enthusiast.

In an interview with one of the guys from Fullsend Podcast (editor’s note: they all look alike, don’t @me), Pereira stated that the reason for the breakup was that Merle was still married.

At first, the absurdity of these claims made the impression that Alex was joking about his failed affair. However, given Merle’s response, and Poatan’s rejoinder, it becomes evident that the former lovers have not ended the relationship on good terms.

Merle Christine’s Rebuttal

Only a couple of hours after Fullsend’s clip went viral, Merle posted a response of her own, as reported by SportsKeeda. On the now-private Instagram profile, she alluded to a “hurt man” trying to lie about what really happened.

“Obviously, I was married in the past,” she wrote. “But I got separated before I started a relationship.”

Merle ended her message with a warning for Pereira, about how if she were to say why she broke up with him, it “wouldn’t end well.’

The public display of discontent between these two has not ended there. A couple hours later, “Poatan” escalated the already-sensitive situation to a new level.

On an Instagram story, Alex posted a print of two different conversations. The left one is in Portuguese, and the right one is in German. Despite not being officially proven, fans believe that the two different chats posted are from Merle talking with Poatan and her former husband, on the same date of September 17, 2022.

Given the post is in Portuguese, here is a literal translation of what Pereira posted:

“So guys, Merle thinks she’ll be able to manipulate you. I’ve been in talks with her ex for a couple of days and now I know what she is capable of. This is two separate ‘love conversations’ with two different individuals, on the same day, same hour.”

“She assaulted me, believing I’d assault her back. But I’m not stupid. I have video recordings of her assaulting me. Since she didn’t get what she wanted now she’s trying to use my name to promote herself.”

When thinking of “domestic violence victim”, the face of one of the most competent strikers to ever walk the face of the earth would certainly not be the first one to come up. However, it goes to show that this topic is extremely sensitive, and if you are in distress or know someone who is, don’t hesitate to seek help.

As for Alex and Merle’s situation, fans are hoping the couple works it out, and that it doesn’t take a toll on Poatan’s mental state. The light-heavyweight champion is one of the most likely candidates to star in the main event of UFC 300, and could face opponents like former Middleweight champion Israel Adesanya, or even a super fight against the Interim Heavyweight Champion Tom Aspinall.
