Strawweight contender Mackenzie Dern’s upcoming bout against 10th-ranked fighter Loopita Godinez can be considered the ‘breaking point’ of Dern’s career. After losing 4 out of her last 6 fights, another loss this Saturday could mean the end of title aspirations for the 31-year-old.

However, this losing streak hasn’t stopped Mackenzie Dern from trending on every social media at every UFC weigh-in event. The reason for that is… well, the MMA fanbase is 60% male, let’s put it like that.

Interestingly enough, when the American-Brazilian fighter first started her MMA career, her body used to look a lot different.

In fact, she used to struggle a lot with making the strawweight 115lbs limit. Out of her 7 first fights, Dern missed weight on three occasions. The last time she missed weight was on her second UFC fight against Amanda Cooper.

At that time, Dern’s physique was not as muscular and toned as it is today. Shortly after UFC 224, Dern announced her pregnancy, which kept her out of competition for over a year.

Only 4 months after delivering a baby, Dern fought at UFC Fight Night in Tampa, against Amanda Ribas. Despite coming fresh out of pregnancy, the strawweight not only made weight but also displayed a far more impressive body shape.

This transformation can be attributed to the new partnership with Rogerio Camões, one of Brazil’s best-regarded physical conditioning coaches. Camões has trained some of the most notorious MMA and BJJ legends from Brazil, including Anderson Silva, Andre Galvão, Paulo Filho, and both Nogueira brothers.

In an interview with Guilherme Cruz, from MMAFighting, the coach explained how he got Dern to lose half of her body fat percentage, while also maintaining her walkaround weight.

Camões emphasized that Dern no longer needs to fear her past weight-cut issues. Over a year of intense training, her body composition has completely changed, leading to significant improvements in both weight management and fighting performance.

When Camões began working with Dern, she weighed 123.5 pounds with a body fat percentage of 22%. Through their rigorous regimen, she managed to maintain her weight while transforming her physique by adding 11 pounds of muscle and drastically reducing her body fat to 11%.

This hard work and dedication have caught everyone’s attention, as Dern’s renewed physical form has translated into better performance inside the octagon.
