Paulo Costa Appears To Have Staph Infection Ahead of UFC 302

Brazilian middleweight slugger Paulo “Borrachinha” Costa is ready to make his second UFC appearance this year, against former UFC champion Sean Strickland, at the co-main event of UFC 302.

Not known for being the most active athlete on the roster, Costa’s upcoming bout is set to fight multiple times in a single year for the first time since 2017. However, recent promotional pictures highlight concern from fans, as Paulo appears to have a staph infection in his foot.

A staph infection, caused by Staphylococcus bacteria, can be particularly dangerous for fighters. These infections can lead to severe skin conditions, abscesses, and even life-threatening complications if the bacteria enter the bloodstream.

Fighters are especially vulnerable to staph infections due to close physical contact and frequent skin abrasions during training. Gym mats, often shared by many athletes, can harbor the bacteria, making proper hygiene and sanitation crucial to prevent the spread of these infections.

Costa Had to Pull Out Due to Staph Before

In October 2023, ‘Borrachinha’ had to pull out of one of the most anticipated fights of the year against Khamzat Chimaev, for UFC 294. However, the Brazilian was forced to withdraw due to a severe staph infection in his elbow.

Costa had to undergo surgery to recover from the infection, while his opponent faced former Welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman in a three-round battle. At the time, Paulo was deemed medically uncleared to compete, leaving the event only days before the scheduled middleweight fight.

Now, with the possibility of another staph infection just days before his UFC 302 appearance, fans are growing increasingly anxious. The timing is particularly concerning given Costa’s history with the ailment, which previously led to his withdrawal from a high-profile bout.

If Costa is forced to pull out again, it would be a significant setback for both him and the UFC. The promotion has heavily marketed the co-main event, anticipating a clash of styles and personalities between Costa and Strickland. Fans are eager to see if Costa can regain his momentum after a series of sporadic fights and health issues.
